89th Commemoration of Çanakkale Victory

As dawn broke in the northwestern province of Çanakkale, a number of Australians, New Zealanders and Turks gathered on the occasion of the 89th anniversary of the Çanakkale Battles to commemorate their forefathers who had lost their lives during World War I. They gathered together at 05.30 local time, when the Anzacs landed at Gelibolu Peninsula 89 years ago. They sang hymns and prayed for those who had lost their lives in the battles. An international ceremony was also held at the Monument of the Fallen on Gelibolu Peninsula on April 25. Culture and Tourism Minister Erkan Mumcu, Australian Defense Minister Robert Murray Hill, the New Zealander Arts, Culture and Heritage Minister, the Australian Air Forces Commander and other officials attended the ceremony. In a statement at the international ceremony, Mumcu qualified the Çanakkale Battles as great epic battles in which the most magnificent examples of solidarity and heroism were displayed.

The Dardanelles, which is a strategic water-way that links Europe to Asia, has been the crossing place of people traveling from Asia to Europe and Europe to Asia for five thousand years.
There have been wars throughout history in the Çanakkale region. Çanakkale attracted attention with "Truva" and brought it to the forefront of recent history and blocked the passage of the most powerful fleet. Thousands of soldiers from Britain, Australia, Canada and New Zealand possibly thought that they had changed the fate of their countries and the history of the world. Gelibolu opened way to become a "country" for Australia and New Zealand. The Çanakkale battles started in July 1914, and ended in November 1918.

"Those heroes that shed their blood and lost their lives.... You are now lying in the soil of a friendly country. Therefore rest in peace. There is no difference between the Johnnies and the Mehmets to us where they lie side by side here in this country of ours..
You, the mothers, who sent their sons from far away countries, wipe away your tears; your sons are now lying in our bosom and are in peace. After having lost their lives on this land they have become our sons as well." Mustafa Kemal Atatürk
